Data Protection Service for vCloud Hybrid Service – Offering a Freemium Tier

With the release of VMware vCloud Hybrid Service, we saw how VMware  brought goodness in Public Cloud. I have already talked about Offline Data Transfer which comes with vCHS and how you can large On-Prem data to VMware vCloud Hybrid Service.


On a similar note, VMware also provides Data Protection Service for vCHS. Well, I am sure every one who is going to opt in vCHS would be interested to have their VMs protected. VMware has integrated their backup and restore functionality on the vCHS portal itself which most vCloud providers can’t do this as of now.


Let us see what is this service and then I will show you how can you opt in this service.


The Data Protection Service (DPS) for vCHS is designed for use with both shared cloud and dedicated cloud infrastructure services and delivers uniform policy-driven data backup and recovery services for virtual workloads residing in the cloud.


This solution builds upon redundancy and resiliency features present in the broader vCHS cloud service architecture, by ensuring virtual machine data contained within a virtual machine (VM) is backed up at regular intervals and available for timely restore on an as-needed basis and when requested by customers.


As a premium service extension to vCHS, DPS requires activation via customer opt-in selection which can be requested at the original point-of-sale or anytime thereafter during an active service subscription period.


Once initial DPS activation is complete, customers have the option to selectively choose any VM (and its associated parent vApp) they would like to have enrolled in the service via the “vCHS Console” with zero-touch policy configuration overhead incurred by customer administrators.


Since DPS  includes auto-policy creation at the time of service activation, common management complexities attributed to traditional data backup and restore operations are virtually eliminated and absorbed by the provider, thereby making DPS easy to consume and simple to administer.


As a policy-enabled backup service, DPS provides easy toggle on/off protection capabilities at the virtual machine level and guarantees a consistent service-level through the implementation of predefined policy and operations standards managed by VMware. In addition to these policy standards, DPS takes advantage of synthetic-full (or synthesized) backups instead of the old mix of “Weekly Full” and “Daily Incremental” backup scheduling encountered in traditional enterprise backup and recovery operations environments. Synthetic-full backups guarantee a full copy of the target virtual machine disk image is captured at every backup service interval with no impact to system performance or capacity overhead. For added efficiency, DPS also leverages VMware’s Changed Block Tracking (CBT) capabilities, which help identify any disk sectors that have changed between two change set IDs for a given virtual machine image (VMDK) and backs up only those delta changes during the next schedule service interval. CBT will thus reduce the amount of data that is copied out by as much as 99% (variable based on actual application change rates), and in combination with synthesized backups, will ensure DPS delivers the highest degree of data integrity and recoverability at an optimal cost:performance ratio.


Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

DPS provides a standard 24-hour RPO, using a default backup policy and pre-defined service interval or schedule. The backup policy ensures that full/synthetic-full backups are applied to all virtual machines that have been registered with DPS, while scheduling these backups during off-peak usage hours for reduced business impact. Given the 24-hour RPO guarantee and the use of synthesized backups, customers can rely on having the ability to request a full restore of a virtual machine image from the previous evening in the event of data loss or data corruption.


Data Retention

DPS will offer a standard 30-day retention period for all backup data associated with protected virtual machines. Given the use of synthesized backups and the aforementioned RPO standards, the data retention period affords users the ability to restore a full image copy of their virtual machine data at any point during the trailing 30 calendar days.


You will be thrilled to know that with the initial service introduction, DPS is available exclusively as a “Freemium” service.


Now let us discuss about Use Cases for DPS and why do you need it. The journey to the cloud sounds all white and fluffy, but wait what could possibly go wrong?

Ok, now let me show you how can you Opt-In this service.


If you have not enabled this service, then you must first Opt-In this service from My VMware Portal.


1. Login to vCHS Console and there you can see “Purchase More Resources” link. Click on it.

2. When you click on it automatically (using SSO) it will let you go to My VMware portal. There you can see your active service subscription. If you scroll down little further there you will see DPS Add On feature. Here you should select it and click on Buy Now.

3. Confirm your purchase (Submit Request) and remember it is a $0 service :).

4. At this time, your service is ready. Now what you have to do is to just register your VMs for backup service. To do that, go to any VDC and click on the Virtual Machines tab.

You can see your VMs there. Just click on the drop down menu and select “Register for backup“. Remember this is a toggle button. You can see register for backup only on those VMs which is not registered with Data Protection Service.




5. You will be asked for confirmation. One interesting part here is, you will be asked to confirm at the time of register this VM that all of the other VM on this vApp will also get registered (**If any). That means backup registration happens on vApp level.




6. At any time, if you feel you don’t need to have your VM registered then just click on the drop down and select “Unregister for VM



You see its the most easiest part and you can protect your VM in few clicks, that’s all and moreover its a “Freemium” service now which means its a $0 service. So why are you waiting, just go for it and spread the good word.
